The Department of Lands manages nearly 2.5 million acres of endowment trust land on behalf of Idaho's public schools and other beneficiary institutions, along with the state's forestry, fire protection, and mining/mineral regulatory programs. The department carries out the constitutional authority of the State Board of Land Commissioners—the Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, State Controller, and Superintendent of Public Instruction, serving ex officio under Article IX, § 7 of the Idaho Constitution—through a Director appointed by the Board.
