NEWS: Idaho Leaders React to Passing of Former Governor Dirk Kempthorne

Dirk Kempthorne, who served as mayor of Boise from 1986-1993, US senator from 1993-1999, governor of Idaho from 1999-2006, and secretary of the interior from 2006-2009, passed away Friday night following a battle with colon cancer.

Gov. Brad Little has ordered the lowering of the Idaho and U.S. flags to half-staff to honor former Gov. Kempthorne. Flags will remain lowered until the day following Kempthorne’s memorial service, which is yet to be determined.

Idaho leaders issued statements remembering Kempthorne today:

Family of Gov. Dirk Kempthorne comments on his passing

The family of Governor Dirk Kempthorne shares with deep sadness that he has passed away, surrounded by those he loved most.

Beyond his public service, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy came from time spent with family and the people he met along the way. He had a rare gift for truly seeing others — remembering names, stories, and the small details that made each person feel known and valued.

“Our family is heartbroken, but we are also deeply grateful — for the time we had with him and for the extraordinary outpouring of love and support we have received from across Idaho and the country.

“We kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and celebrate his life together. Please know how much your prayers, messages, and memories mean to us.

“Additional details will be shared in the coming days.

Governor Little’s statement on Governor Kempthorne’s passing

Teresa and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Governor Dirk Kempthorne. Our friendship goes back to our college days, where Dirk and I shared the same state government class – an experience that helped set the course for a lifetime of public service for him.

“We had the privilege of watching Dirk and Patricia begin their journey together. From the very beginning, it was clear Dirk and Patricia would lead lives as dedicated and passionate leaders.

“Dirk’s career was marked by extraordinary service at every level. His early work as an industry advocate and campaign manager for Phil Batt led to his leadership as a successful Boise mayor who helped change the trajectory of our capital city. During his distinguished tenure in the U.S. Senate, Dirk served Idaho with vision, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to doing what was right.

“As Governor, Dirk left an enduring mark on our state. With Patricia’s steadfast partnership, he championed children and families, strengthened public education, and led transformational investments in our transportation system that will benefit Idahoans for generations. He elevated Idaho’s voice on the national stage as chairman of the National Governors Association.

“We were all proud when President Bush selected Dirk to serve as Secretary of the Interior. In that role, he never lost sight of Idaho or the West. He understood the value of our lands and worked tirelessly to steward them with care and respect.

“Even after his time in public office, Dirk never slowed down. He remained a relentless advocate for our military and veterans, most recently championing the USS Idaho Virginia-class submarine. It is especially heartbreaking that he was not able to attend its commissioning this weekend — a moment he worked so hard to make possible.

“I will always remember Dirk’s generosity and warmth. He was thoughtful, gracious, and deeply committed to the people around him.

“To Patricia, Jeff, Heather, and their families, Teresa and I extend our heartfelt condolences. We join all Idahoans in honoring and celebrating a life of remarkable service to our state and our nation. Dirk’s legacy will endure for generations, and he will be deeply missed.

I join Idahoans today in mourning the loss of Dirk, but also feel immense gratitude for his decades of service, loyalty, and the lasting impact he has had on Idaho and America. Crapo Statement on the Passing of Dirk Kempthorne

Governor Kempthorne’s leadership and vision helped shape the state of Idaho for generations.  From his time as mayor of Boise to his tenure as governor, and later, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, he worked tirelessly to preserve the natural beauty and resources that define Idaho and the American West.  His legacy is rooted in public service, with a decades-long body of work dedicated to improving the lives of others.

“I am grateful to Dirk for his thoughtful mentorship, particularly as I prepared to fill his seat in the U.S. Senate.  As I did, Dirk was a strong, reliable partner on land use, environmental and economic development issues important to Idaho.  I am especially appreciative of the many conversations we have shared in the years since.  My prayers are with Patricia and the entire Kempthorne family as they navigate this difficult time in the days and months ahead.  Dirk will be missed.

Lt. Gov. Bedke’s Statement on the Passing of Dirk Kempthorne

This morning I learned with great sadness that Dirk Kempthorne, my friend and political mentor, passed away last night.

“Idaho is deeply indebted to Dirk for his many years of faithful service to this great state. His contributions are almost too numerous to list. Dirk served as Boise’s Mayor and Idaho’s Governor, and then served as a US Senator and eventually as US Interior Secretary. Dirk loved Idaho and always kept her well-being at the forefront of his efforts. Idaho’s transportation system was placed on a firm foundation when the GARVEE Bond funding mechanism was passed under his leadership. He was also instrumental in finalizing the Nez Perce Agreement which protects and preserves Idaho’s largest water resource, the great Snake River.

“On a personal level, I owe a huge debt to Dirk for helping to launch my political career by appointing me to the Idaho House in 2000. I’m also grateful for the example he set as a person of integrity and faith. I well remember, early in my career, attending a critical water meeting which he was leading. Before starting the deliberations, Dirk asked those present to join him in praying for a good, solid, and equitable solution. He did so unabashedly and without pretense. He was not just a hearer of the word, but an authentic doer.

“Dirk Kempthorne has left his mark on Idaho like few others, and his legacy of leadership and public service will be long remembered. Sarah and I extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to Patricia and their children. Thank you for sharing your beloved husband and father with all of Idaho.

Statement from Sen. Jim Risch

Vicki and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Dirk Kempthorne, a faithful public servant who made a lasting mark on Idaho and our nation. From his time as Boise Mayor, U.S. Senator, Governor, and Secretary of the Interior, to his leadership of The Peregrine Fund and the USS Idaho Commissioning Committee, Dirk always had Idaho at the forefront of his efforts. Idahoans owe a debt of gratitude to Dirk Kempthorne and his tireless work in strengthening what he calls the ‘43rd star in the galaxy of states that make up the greatest nation in the world.’ I am honored to have known Dirk, to have served alongside him, and to have called him a friend. He will be greatly missed.

Statement from Caleb Pirc, General Counsel for Idaho Family Policy Center

Idaho lost a great man today with the passing of former Governor Kempthorne. Not only was Governor Kempthorne a long-time public servant—Mayor of Boise, United States Senator, Governor of Idaho, and Secretary of the Interior—but he was also a man of deep conviction and faith. In fact, the first time I met Governor Kempthorne was at the Idaho prayer breakfast where he shared how his faith in Christ guided his life. His consistent faithfulness to Christ and his family was what truly made him a great man. I don’t know much about his politics, but what I do know is he loved this State, he loved his country, and he dedicated his life to serving his Maker. That is a life well-lived. Please join me in praying for his family.

Even in the face of recent health challenges, he demonstrated the same courage and resolve that marked his decades in public service. His strength was evident, his optimism unmistakable, and his commitment to others undiminished.

“Dirk Kempthorne represented the very best of public service,” said MSPC President Chris Cargill. “He led with integrity, treated people with respect, and left a lasting mark on our state and our country. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to honor him and to know him.”

As Idaho lowers its flags in remembrance, we reflect on a legacy that will endure far beyond a lifetime—a legacy of leadership rooted in service, guided by principle, and carried forward by those he inspired.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Patricia, and to the entire Kempthorne family.
