Update 11/17/24: The job of staff secretary was given to Will Scharf.
According to a report from Shelby Talcott at Semafor, former Idaho solicitor general Theo Wold is under consideration for the position of staff secretary in the second Trump Administration:
Theo Wold, who has spoken in favor of Trump’s mass deportation plan, is also getting looked at as a possible staff secretary, according to the same three people familiar with the situation who confirmed Gor’s candidacy to Semafor. Wold served in the first Trump administration and worked closely with Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is informally involved in the transition process. He’s also the former Solicitor General of Idaho, and a close ally of Sen. Mike Lee.
Wold previously served as the Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy in the first Trump White House, where he was instrumental in crafting President Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy. He came to Idaho after the 2020 election, working on Raúl Labrador’s successful campaign for attorney general and subsequently serving as solicitor general. He stepped down in 2023, later training in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as an intelligence officer.
Wold spent the past year speaking out about the dangers of ranked choice voting. Proposition 1, which would have implemented ranked choice voting and a top-four jungle primary, was overwhelmingly defeated in last week’s election. Wold was also hired by the Claremont Institute as director of the Administrative State Project, which endeavors to find ways to cut back the massive federal bureaucracy.
According to Semafor, the office of staff secretary is “responsible in part for managing paper flow to Trump in the Oval Office.” This is a pivotal position in the White House, as Trump’s previous staff secretary was reported to have been hiding certain documents and attempting to distract him from ideas that he disagreed with.
Others under consideration for the position, according to Semafor, are Mike Davis, Will Scharf, and Leonard Leo.
