The Department of Juvenile Corrections was created in 1995 to provide accountability, rehabilitation, and community protection for juvenile offenders committed to its custody, operating three juvenile correctional centers—in Nampa, Lewiston, and St. Anthony—alongside county juvenile probation departments statewide. Its "balanced approach" philosophy gives equal weight to community protection, offender accountability, and competency development, distinct from the primarily punitive orientation of the adult correctional system.

Advisory Commission
IDJC is supported by the Idaho Juvenile Justice Commission, a Governor-appointed state advisory group required under federal law to coordinate juvenile justice grant funding and planning.
