Idaho families can soon apply for funding towards K-12 educational expenses through a federal tax credit program, managed by the Idaho Department of Education
(BOISE) – Families in Idaho can now apply to receive funding to cover both public and private educational expenses thanks to a new federal tax benefit that allows parents to donate money directly to an approved, non-profit Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO).
Individuals can contribute up to $1,700 to an approved SGO, or $3,400 if filing jointly. The donors can then claim a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit on their 2027 taxes. SGOs will use the funds to provide scholarships for Idaho students for a wide range of qualified K-12 expenses, including academic tutoring; additional costs for special needs students; educational materials and equipment; internet access; computers and technology; and more. The credit is also available to private school students who wish to offset the cost of tuition or fees.
“We had the opportunity to participate in a program that would benefit any Idahoan with a child in a K-12 grade, whether they’re part of our public system or attending a private school, and we did not want to leave money on the table,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield. “The scope of this opportunity made it an obvious choice for every student in Idaho, no matter where they are attending school.”
SGOs apply to and are approved by the Idaho Department of Education for participation in the program. All approved SGOs will be posted for public access via a list maintained by the Department here: https://www.sde.idaho.gov/education-freedom-tax-credit/. The list will be available and updated as SGO applications are approved. All SGOs are registered 501(c)(3) public charities whose primary purpose is awarding K-12 scholarships.
The Idaho Department of Education will issue additional guidance to families, including a list of approved SGOs, in the coming weeks. Organizations interested in becoming an approved SGO can learn more about eligibility requirements and access application materials here.
