Fraud in the United States has reached an unprecedented level. Not only has fraud risen, but most Americans do not trust federal, state, and local governments to prevent fraud and protect taxpayer dollars effectively. The House passed two critical bills this week to crack down on fraud in federal programs and protect taxpayer dollars.
This week, the Congressional Western Caucus hosted a Wildfire Week to advocate for better wildfire prevention and suppression. I was grateful to join several important discussions on this issue.
Idahoans recognize how close the wildfire issue is to home. Many of you have dealt with deadly wildfires or know someone who has. We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave wildland firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect our communities.
Supporting Anti-Fraud Legislation
The fraud uncovered in California, Minnesota, and several other states is disgraceful. I applaud President Trump, Vice President Vance, and several federal agencies for their efforts to combat and eliminate the problem. Now, it’s up to Congress to work with the DOJ and ensure hardworking Americans are no longer taken advantage of. Below are the bills the House passed this week:
- National Fraud Enforcement Division Act: This bill codifies the National Fraud Enforcement Division within the Department of Justice to crack down on fraud in federal programs, ensure program integrity, and protect taxpayer dollars.
- Preventing Rip-offs and Obtaining Oversight of Funds Act: This bill combats fraud in federally funded state-run programs by ensuring states share program data with the Department of Justice to support the investigation and prosecution of fraudsters.
Honoring Wildland Firefighters
Every day, first responders go to work not knowing what awaits them. Brave men and women across the country put their lives on the line to protect us and our communities.
Wildland firefighters are no different. During Wildfire Week, the Congressional Western Caucus held a moment to remember this year’s fallen wildland firefighters. We are grateful to the fallen, their families, and loved ones for their service and sacrifice. God bless them.
Roundtable Discussion During Wildfire Week
I was grateful for the opportunity to meet with several groups for a roundtable on wildfire policy earlier this week.
Ongoing discussions about the best way to advocate for better wildfire prevention are critical. I’m grateful to the stakeholders and other members of Congress for their partnership on this important issue.
