RELEASE: Committee Unanimously Approves Undergraduate Medical Education Plan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 19, 2025

BOISE, Idaho — The Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Committee, working with the Idaho State Board of Education, formally accepted the Undergraduate Medical Education “Train Here, Stay Here” plan during its meeting on December 19. This important milestone advances the state’s efforts to strengthen and expand pathways for Idaho students pursuing careers in medicine.

“Train Here, Stay Here,” developed over several months by a statewide working group of legislators, higher education leaders, health care partners, and community stakeholders, outlines strategies to grow medical education capacity, enhance clinical training opportunities across Idaho, and better coordinate training partnerships statewide. The plan reflects thoughtful consideration of public input received earlier this month.

Committee members expressed that the plan provides a strong framework for addressing Idaho’s ongoing physician workforce needs, particularly in rural and underserved communities, while supporting students who aspire to become physicians and health care leaders in the Gem State.

The Board will transmit the approved plan to the Governor’s Office and the Idaho Legislature by January 2, 2026, as part of its statutory responsibilities outlined in House Bill 368 (2025), continuing Idaho’s collaborative approach to expanding medical education capacity and health care access for all Idahoans.

The plan will be available upon submission to the Legislature.
