WASHINGTON—Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson cosponsored the Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act and the Integrated Cross Border Law Enforcement Operations Expansion Act, legislation that would address northern border security by strengthening oversight and United States-Canada border security cooperation. These bills are led by Congressman Langworthy (R-NY).

“The Biden administration’s failed open-border policies created a catastrophe at both our southern and northern borders,” said Rep. Simpson. “Although the crisis at our southern border was undeniable, the numbers at our northern border were also startling. As the longest international border in the world, illegal migrant crossings skyrocketed at unprecedented levels within just a few years. In addition to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, there must be increased oversight to ensure this kind of national security crisis never happens again. I am proud to cosponsor these bills to keep northern border states like Idaho safe.”

The northern border security legislation includes:

  • H.R. 5517 – Northern Border Security Enhancement and Review Act – this legislation would strengthen oversight and accountability for northern border security by requiring the Department of Homeland Security to submit a threat analysis of the northern border every two years, beginning September 2, 2026.
  • H.R. 5518 – Integrated Cross Border Law Enforcement Operations Expansion Act – this legislation would strengthen United States-Canada border security cooperation by directing the Department of Homeland Security to negotiate agreements to expand the joint operation of United States and Canadian officers through land, air, and maritime enforcement operations, providing legal protections, and closing coordination gaps.
