EDITORIAL: Nuclear Energy: Powering America’s Future

By Sen. Jim Risch

Nuclear is celebrating its strongest support in decades, and Idaho is at the center of this momentum.

Idaho and the Idaho National Lab are driving nuclear research and innovation that will move our country forward.

This Congress, I’ve worked to strengthen American energy security by:

  • Eliminating U.S. reliance on Russian uranium and establishing a domestic nuclear fuel supply  program;
  • Supporting nuclear development by cutting bureaucratic red tape and fast-tracking the permitting process; and
  • Ensuring the U.S. remains the global leader in nuclear energy by streamlining our export strategy and preventing our adversaries, like Russia and China, from expanding their influence over global energy.

But there is still more work to be done.

Idaho is at the cutting edge of developing new nuclear technologies, but the significant financial risk of commercialization is hamstringing the industry. We need to mitigate risk to spur new reactor construction.

This week, I introduced the ARC Act to incentivize investment in American nuclear energy and build the next generation of nuclear reactors.

The United States can and should be the leader in nuclear development. Energy security is national security, and nuclear power is essential to our defense. We can’t let our adversaries beat us to the punch.

With President-elect Trump back in the White House and Republican control of Congress, we will restore American dominance in energy production.

As your Senator, I will work to ensure that the U.S. remains where we always have been—at the forefront of nuclear innovation.
