Self-Governing Agency
The State Public Defender Act of 2023 created a single state agency to provide indigent criminal defense statewide, assuming full financial and legal responsibility from Idaho's counties effective October 1, 2024. The office employs a District Public Defender in each of Idaho's seven judicial districts to provide constitutionally required legal representation to indigent adults and juveniles in criminal and commitment proceedings.
