Boise – Senator Ben Adams, (R-Nampa) will be facing new opposition to his proposed Constitutional Amendment, which would create Idaho’s only constitutional protection for Federally managed public lands, barring them from sale and ensuring they remain open and accessible for future generations.
The amendment, which Adams introduced earlier this month, would prevent the State from selling future lands granted or acquired from the federal government. It also establishes guiding principles—with a focus on conservation, public access, and responsible use.
“Idahoans should be furious that big Industry would take the side of those who support selling off public lands, rather than siding with the interests of Idahoans,” Adams said. “Public lands belong to the people. These efforts to undermine protections for Public Land have only served to strengthen my resolve.”
A July 2025 poll by Change Research found overwhelming, bipartisan opposition to the sale of public land in Idaho, with 95% of Republican voters and 97% of Democrat voters agreeing that public land should not be sold.
“Public lands are a precious inheritance for Idahoans who’ve hunted, fished, and explored them for generations. This amendment makes it clear: these lands are not for sale to the highest bidder. They belong to the people of Idaho—now and always.”
Adams emphasized that preserving land is not just about conservation but about resisting short-sighted deals and protecting Idaho’s identity.
“Selling off public land for a quick payday is a betrayal of our state motto: Esto Perpetua—let it be perpetual,” Adams said. “This land isn’t a developer’s project or a billionaire’s private hunting retreat. It’s our children’s birthright.”
Adams says he will be moving forward to a public hearing and encourages supporters to show up for their public lands. For those opposing SJR103, Adams had a simple message. “You want a sagebrush rebellion? You’ll get one.”
