By Idaho GOP Chairwoman Dorothy Moon
Our Declaration of Independence, drafted 250 years ago, states that it is a self-evident truth that human beings are endowed by their Creator with the right to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
The right to life is the most important of them all. Everything else depends on it. Yet for nearly fifty years, preborn children in America were systematically denied that precious right. Their lives could be terminated at any point, from conception to birth, simply by their mother’s choice.
I was proud to cast a vote to protect preborn life in the Legislature in 2020, on a bill that was contingent upon Roe v. Wade being overturned. Some thought that day would never come, but thanks to President Trump’s Supreme Court appointees, it finally happened just two years later.
Since then, Idaho has been a sanctuary for life—a place where all lives matter, even the preborn. These unique human beings, with their own characteristics, their own DNA, and limitless potential, can grow and thrive in our state without fear that they might be torn apart, limb from limb, simply because they became inconvenient.
Yet there are forces at work who want to take us back to a more barbaric time. Left-wing organizations are circulating a petition to put abortion on your ballot. They will cloak it in phrases like “women’s rights” and “reproductive health,” but make no mistake—this initiative seeks to put preborn babies on the chopping block once more.
Cultures are judged by how they treat the most vulnerable, and there is nobody more vulnerable than a preborn baby. It is imperative that we maintain protections for the preborn in this state and take a stand for life at all ages. The Idaho GOP will be on the front lines of this campaign, from now until Election Day in November, to make sure voters understand what is at stake.
This weekend is the March for Life, the annual gathering in defense of those yet to be born. Vice President J.D. Vance, whose wife recently announced that she is pregnant with the couple’s fourth child, will headline the national event. Many others will gather at the Capitol in Boise on Saturday.
For years, the March for Life was dedicated to overturning Roe v. Wade. We were victorious in that long battle, but the fight continues at the state level. This year, Idaho voters will be asked whether they truly believe in the dignity of preborn life—whether they truly believe the words of the Declaration of Independence, written a quarter of a millennium ago.
I do, and I know you do too. I am proud to stand alongside you to defend Idaho’s culture of life and liberty.
