MOON: Challenges and Opportunities in the New Year

By Idaho GOP Chairwoman Dorothy Moon

A few years ago, I got a new license plate for my car. I chose the number 2024 as a reminder of how important that year was going to be. The fate of our nation hung in the balance—would we accept the yoke of woke totalitarianism, progressivism, and Marxism, or would we elect a leader who believed in freedom and liberty for the American people?

What a difference a year has made. President Donald Trump entered office with a mandate from the American people and has delivered in ways we could never have imagined a year ago. From protecting American industry to defunding woke programs like USAID and securing our southern border, President Trump has America moving in the right direction again.

Here in Idaho, 2025 saw one of the best legislative sessions that I can remember. Republican lawmakers passed bills to ban tyrannical mask mandates, protect health freedom, give parents more choice in their children’s education, and restrict DEI requirements in higher education—not to mention more than $400 billion in ongoing tax relief.

The year 2026 will bring new challenges and new blessings, both at the national and local levels. The midterm elections will decide whether President Trump has Congress behind him to make America great again, or a Democratic House that will obstruct—or even impeach—him to stop his agenda.

Here in Idaho, a new legislative session begins in just a few weeks, with looming questions about the budget, immigration enforcement, and now concerns about how childcare subsidies are being used. Republican lawmakers and statewide officials will have a lot on their plates, and that’s before the primary election season begins this spring.

In addition to statewide and legislative campaigns, Idaho voters will also decide what to do with a number of ballot initiatives. The same folks who tried to impose ranked-choice voting on us in 2024 are back with measures to legalize marijuana and repeal Idaho’s ban on abortion. The Idaho GOP strongly opposes both and will work hard to educate voters about what is at stake.

On the other hand, the Idaho GOP supports an initiative to repeal the grocery sales tax, which will save you money on every bag of potatoes or loaf of bread. If you haven’t already signed the petition, do it today—we have copies available at the Idaho GOP office in Boise.

Will 2026 be a triumphant year for Idaho and America? Or will we slide back toward the socialist nightmare the opposing party so desperately wants to impose on us? The power lies with you. Register to vote, talk to your representatives, and do your part to keep Idaho—and America—great. I wish you a happy New Year and a blessed and prosperous 2026.
