By Dorothy Moon, Idaho GOP Chairwoman
First, the good news: Idaho voters rejected Proposition 1 by a margin of 56% to 44%, which means preborn babies will still be protected in Idaho. Thank you! Despite a nationwide blue wave, despite record turnout from those who wanted to legalize abortion, despite $6 million spent to gaslight you into thinking Prop 1 was a moderate proposal, you went to the polls and said that Idaho values life.
Defeating Prop 1 has been my top priority as chair of the party for more than a year, and I am so grateful to you, the voters, for standing up for life. So many organizations and individuals joined forces to defend our pro-life culture in Idaho—Stop Prop 1, the White Rose Resistance, the LDS Church, the Catholic Church, countless other churches and faith-based groups, and so many more.
When out-of-state interests came in and demanded we change our laws and our values, Idaho stood up and said no. I am so proud to be an Idahoan today.
That’s not the only good news. All seven Republican statewide officers won reelection, and all three members of our congressional delegation are headed back to Washington, DC, to fight for Idaho. That includes Sen. Jim Risch, who was a national target of left-wing groups who thought they had a chance by running a former Democratic state legislator as a phony “independent” candidate. Despite raising nearly $2 million—a good chunk of which came from out of state—that former Democrat received roughly the same share of the vote as previous challengers.
I won’t lie—Tuesday was a rough day for Republicans nationwide. Between gas prices and inflation, the war in Iran, and a perception that the Trump administration lost sight of the challenges facing the very working-class voters who sent him back to the White House in the first place, voters either checked out or checked the other box.
Despite losing some legislative seats in three swing districts, Idaho Republicans maintained our supermajority in both the House and the Senate, which is more than can be said for our friends in other red states. The Idaho GOP will continue to support policies that align with our platform and expand freedom and opportunity for all.
While the nationwide picture got much more challenging for Republicans, Idaho stood strong. When Congress becomes mired in gridlock and endless investigations, and as the people of America are reminded that Democratic policies increase misery at the cost of prosperity, they will be looking for leadership. Idaho is ready to provide that leadership.
It’s time for Republicans in Idaho to prove that it’s possible to maintain economic growth and prosperity without sacrificing our values of faith, family, and freedom. Like a city on a hill, Idaho can be a beacon to the nation, and I believe we are ready to lead.
