RELEASE: Steven Thayn Announces Candidacy for Idaho Republican Party Chairman

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EMMETT, Idaho — Former Idaho State Senator Steven Thayn today announced his candidacy for Chairman of the Idaho Republican Party, calling for a renewed focus on unity, problem-solving, and the advancement of limited-government solutions to Idaho’s most pressing challenges.

“After serving sixteen years in the Idaho Legislature, I have come to believe that the Republican Party is the best tool we have to preserve and promote limited government,” Thayn said. “But if we are going to succeed, we must become more than an organization that wins elections. We must become an organization that solves problems.”

During his legislative service, Thayn worked on issues involving education, health care, poverty, economic opportunity, and government reform. He said those experiences taught him that many of the systems Idaho relies upon today were designed decades ago under assumptions that no longer serve the people well.

“Our education, poverty, and health care systems were largely built upon ideas that expand dependency and government control rather than strengthen families, communities, and individual responsibility,” Thayn said. “These systems continue to produce disappointing results because they were designed according to flawed assumptions. It is time to retool them using limited-government principles that empower people rather than institutions.”

Thayn emphasized that meaningful reform cannot occur without unity within the Republican Party.

“Unity does not mean uniformity of opinion,” he said. “Nor does it mean forced agreement. Forced unity always leads to tyranny. Real unity is voluntary. It is built through listening, respect, and a sincere effort to solve problems together.”

Pointing to the Constitutional Convention as an example, Thayn noted that the Founders faced deep disagreements but ultimately found solutions by seeking common ground and higher principles.

“The delegates disagreed strongly over representation, yet through patience and collaboration they discovered solutions that respected the legitimate concerns of both large and small states. The result was one of the greatest governing documents in human history. That same spirit is needed in our party today.”

Thayn believes the Republican Party should follow the example of the Founders, who used government not to concentrate power but to return power to the people.

“The Bill of Rights is a perfect example. Government was used to limit government. The Founders understood that freedom grows when power remains close to the people. Our challenge today is to apply those same principles to the issues facing Idaho families.”

As chairman, Thayn said he would work to create a culture that welcomes ideas, encourages respectful debate, and focuses the party’s energy on addressing real challenges facing Idaho citizens, including housing affordability, educational excellence, health care reform, and pathways out of poverty.

“We spend too much time engaged in internal struggles that bring little value to the people we serve. Idahoans are looking for solutions. They want affordable homes, better educational opportunities for their children, affordable health care, and a path to prosperity. Republicans should be leading those conversations.”

Thayn said lasting unity requires agreement on several foundational principles: that there are enduring laws of cause and effect that govern human prosperity, that those laws are discovered rather than invented, that societies prosper when they align with those principles, and that solutions become clearer when leaders seek wisdom beyond themselves.

“Unity begins when we bring our concerns and ideas to the table, listen carefully to one another, and search for solutions that address everyone’s legitimate concerns. Unity is not achieved when one faction defeats another. It is achieved when people work together to discover better answers.”

Thayn concluded by calling on Republicans throughout Idaho to unite around a shared mission of service and problem-solving.

“When Republicans embrace unity, we become more than a political party. We become a governing force capable of solving problems and strengthening our communities. As we move forward, I believe the words of Jesus Christ provide the best guide: ‘By this shall men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.'”
