By Idaho GOP Chairwoman Dorothy Moon
In 1789, shortly after taking office as the first President of the United States, George Washington issued a proclamation of Thanksgiving:
…it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor…
Our young nation had endured tremendous turmoil for nearly two decades but had emerged from the crucible strong and ready to take its place among the powers of the earth. It was altogether fitting that Washington gave thanks to God.
We still have much to be thankful for today.
The election of Donald Trump to Washington’s office reversed the fortunes of our country. Inflation has slowed, our borders are being enforced, peace is spreading throughout the nation, and our streets are safer than ever.
As I write this, I learned that two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., have been shot and are in critical condition. As I pray for a Thanksgiving miracle, I am reminded that the price of freedom and safety has always been high.
Idaho, too, has much to be thankful for. Last legislative session, we saw tremendous victories, including bans on mask mandates, protections for medical freedom, tax cuts, expanded school choice, and much more. The work is never done, but we continue to make progress toward a freer and more prosperous society.
I’m thankful for many things we often take for granted. From antibiotics to mobile phones, technological progress has made our lives safer and more convenient than ever. Yet I’m also thankful for my home on the mountain, where I can escape the rush of life and enjoy nature as God created it.
We have a busy year ahead, with the legislative session starting in January, primary elections in May, and a host of ballot initiatives vying for your attention. I’m thankful that Idahoans stood up to ban the barbaric practice of abortion, and I am confident voters will reject any attempt to bring it back.
I’m deeply grateful to live in a place where timeless values are cherished and protected. Here in Idaho, we believe in the free market, in human dignity, in the reality of truth, and in the sovereignty of God. I believe this is why our state continues to lead the nation—economically, materially, and spiritually.
I am thankful to live in this state, in this nation, at this time. Nowhere else would we have the opportunities we have here and now to defend and protect faith, family, and freedom. May the spirit of gratitude enrich you all, and I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving.
