MOON: The Purpose of the Idaho GOP

By Idaho GOP Chairwoman Dorothy Moon

I sometimes hear people ask, why have political parties at all? Why not just vote for the best person for the job? That sounds good on paper, but in reality, parties serve important purposes at every level of government.

Under our republican system of government, voters elect lawmakers to represent them. Whichever party holds the majority—whether in Congress or the Idaho Legislature—controls committees and decides which bills are heard. Republicans have held that majority in Idaho since 1960, which is why our state remains the best and freest in the Union.

Sure, we don’t always agree on every issue. Within the Idaho GOP, we have sharp debates all the time. Yet when election season arrives, we come together to elect Republicans. The Idaho Republican Party remains the first line of defense for constitutional rights and the traditional values of faith, family, and freedom in the Gem State.

The Idaho GOP doesn’t just fight to elect Republicans—we’re in the trenches every day to keep Idaho free. Last year, when out-of-state groups and local progressives tried to force ranked choice voting on Idaho, we organized a statewide defense of our values. Voters responded with a resounding rejection, defeating the scheme by a 70-30 margin.

Now, heading into 2026, the Idaho GOP is mobilizing again. Several ballot initiatives are circulating; one deserves your support, and another must be stopped.

First, the bad. Leftists are pushing an initiative to erase Idaho’s protections for preborn babies. Abortion has taken tens of millions of lives over the past fifty years, and I was proud to vote to ban it in Idaho while serving in the Legislature. The day Roe v. Wade fell was one of the greatest in American history. Idaho must remain a sanctuary for life, which is why the Idaho GOP has joined pro-life allies in urging voters to decline to sign.

The good news: Idahoans now have a chance to cut their own taxes by supporting the grocery tax repeal initiative. GOP volunteers collected thousands of signatures at county fairs this summer, and we’re just getting started. Idaho is one of only a handful of states that taxes food—milk, eggs, bread, everything you put in your cart. With a stroke of a pen, voters can put repeal on the 2026 ballot.

The Idaho GOP works hard to keep citizens informed through outreach like this. We’re not funded by big PACs or endowments but by the generosity of everyday Idahoans. Every day I feel blessed to see donations of $5, $10, or $25, because it’s a reminder that our party is a grassroots organization.

We are committed to keeping Idaho a haven for faith, family, and freedom—but we can’t do it without you. Together, let’s head into 2026 united in purpose.
