By Idaho GOP Chairwoman Dorothy Moon
I just have to ask: what’s going on with the other party lately? Like you, I’ve been watching the news and shaking my head. Protests and riots in our biggest cities? People waving the Mexican flag in the streets of L.A. to oppose deporting illegal aliens? Communists and satanists rallying at the Idaho State Capitol because they hate our president? When will it end?
When Donald Trump came down the golden escalator ten years ago this week, he represented an unexpected and unprecedented sea change in American politics. At the time, Republican leadership had coalesced around a platform focused mostly on economic issues. These leaders believed manufacturing jobs were gone for good, that free trade was inevitable, that foreign wars would never end, and that we should consider supporting amnesty for illegal aliens.
Donald Trump changed all of that. Today’s Republican Party believes in putting America First. We want to end wars rather than start them. We believe trade deals should benefit the American people. And we support enforcing our immigration laws.
There was a time when people in the other party supported these common-sense positions too. In his State of the Union Address 30 years ago, President Bill Clinton sounded an awful lot like Donald Trump:
“Our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens.”
I don’t remember any street protests with Mexican flags or federal judges telling the president he couldn’t enforce the law back then, do you?
Even just ten years ago, right around the time Donald Trump launched his campaign, far-left Senator Bernie Sanders said we can’t have open borders, that it would destroy American jobs.
So what changed?
The truth is, the Democratic Party has become radical: taken over by communists, socialists, and other leftists who want to tear this country apart. Just last week they protested against the idea of an American king, but only a few years ago, more than half of Democrats wanted to confine you to your home if you didn’t get the COVID-19 vaccine. Nearly half supported imprisoning people for questioning the vaccine on social media. And 45% thought police should lock you away in a “quarantine camp” if you refused the shot.
This is who they are.
If there are any reasonable voices left on the other side, I’d love to meet them, because right now, their leaders and spokespeople are acting pretty darn unhinged. More than ever, I’m proud to represent a party that stands with the people and upholds the values that made this country great in the first place.
