Many of us are old enough to remember what our country was like before everything went mad. Whether you grew up in the 1950s, 70s, or 90s, you remember an America where we knew the difference between boys and girls and individual rights were sacred. Our country was a force for good in the world.
Today, we face censorship of our speech, out of control inflation and debt, and an all out attack on traditional values. Our society has gone downhill fast, hasn’t it? I would say it can’t get any worse but you and I both know it can. To be a conservative means holding on to the values that made our country great in the first place, values that are increasingly under attack in our modern culture.
The Republican Party is the last bastion against this destruction of our country. Here in Idaho, we have been fighting this battle for years. I recently read through a list of resolutions from the 2014 State Convention and was surprised to see many of the same ideas we are still debating today.
Ten years ago, the Idaho GOP resolved that:
- Congress should enforce immigration law
- Higher education must be fiscally accountable and transparent
- The 2nd amendment should be defended
- Higher education must allow for free speech and due process
- The Legislature should create a school choice tax credit
- Idaho should withdraw from the Obamacare exchange
Today, we face invasion on our southern border, but some Idaho lawmakers still want to give driver’s licenses to illegals!
Higher ed is less accountable and transparent than ever — when the Legislature put a stop to the University of Phoenix boondoggle, a university administrator personally dumped thousands of dollars to elect candidates who would support gambling with your tax dollars.
Ten years later and we’re still defending the 2nd amendment against those who would see you disarmed before criminals and tyrants alike. We’re still dealing with the high costs of Obamacare. We’re still trying to find a solution for families who want to escape the public school system.
This is not a hopeless fight, but it is a necessary one. Many years ago, Ronald Reagan said that freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. Every generation must fight the same battle against tyranny and totalitarianism, lest we lose the liberties our forefathers died to protect.
As you prepare to vote in the primary on May 21, as you wade through mudslinging mailers and text messages, do your research to figure out who is fighting for liberty and who is willing to let it be extinguished. The future of our state, and our nation, is in your hands.
